Spatiotemporal Person and Asset Tracking System

13/08/2024 – The Dig_IT project continues to make significant strides in enhancing safety and operational efficiency in the mining industry. Recently, Task 5.3.3, led by LIBRA AI Technologies, was successfully completed, marking a crucial development in the design and implementation of a Spatiotemporal Person and Asset Tracking System.

The primary goal of Task 5.3.3 was to create a system capable of tracking, analyzing, and forecasting the positions of people and assets in real-time. This innovative system is designed to offer the following advanced capabilities:

  • Real-Time Early Collision Warning: Provides immediate alerts to users about potential collisions based on current trajectories, allowing for quick preventive actions.
  • Safety Rule Compliance Monitoring: Warns users when they are about to breach safety regulations, particularly in relation to proximity to restricted areas.
  • Behavioral Analysis and Anomaly Detection: Monitors and analyzes movements to detect irregular behaviors, such as vehicles taking unexpected routes, and issues appropriate warnings.

Collaborative Efforts and End User Engagement

This task was a collaborative effort involving several key partners, including LIBRA AI Technologies, ICCS, Sintef, EUROCORE, and Tampere University (TAU). The end users involved, primarily from Dig_IT use cases who have adopted Smart Garment technology, include Titania, Marini, and Kemi. These end users play a critical role in testing and validating the system in real-world mining environments.

Alignment with Work Package Goals

The Spatiotemporal Person and Asset Tracking System is an AI-enabled tool that contributes significantly to the goals of Work Package 5 (WP5). WP5 focuses on introducing Smart Technologies into the mining industry to enhance safety and operational efficiency. By preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of workers, this system is an essential component of the Intelligent Safety Toolbox.

Integration and Future Applications

The outcomes of Task 5.3.3 are set to benefit other tasks within the Dig_IT project. For instance, the alerts generated by this system will be integrated into Smart Garments, allowing miners to receive notifications via smart earplugs or LED lights. Additionally, the Decision Support System (DSS) will utilize the data from these alerts to refine safety protocols and improve hazard detection mechanisms over time.

Detailed Task Execution

Throughout this task, the team focused on several key areas:

  • ML Model Development: Machine learning models were explored and refined to predict the future positions of individuals and assets using real-time data from mining operations. These models are designed to improve continuously as more data is collected.
  • Alert Data Modeling: The structure of the alerts was defined to ensure effective processing and dissemination by ICCS.
  • Hazard Simulation: A module was developed to simulate hazardous situations, allowing for the validation of the alerting system’s effectiveness.
  • Application Development: The application logic was completed, ensuring that the system generates accurate alerts based on predictions of future positions and the detection of existing hazards in the operational environment.

This finalized solution is now ready for integration and further testing with the end users’ systems, ensuring it meets the safety and operational requirements outlined in the project’s objectives.

Related Deliverables and Tools Used

The Spatiotemporal Person and Asset Tracking System is a vital part of Deliverable D5.3, the Intelligent Safety Toolbox, which is currently under review. The task utilized several software tools, including a custom Python implementation and data infrastructure managed through a Kafka cluster deployed and maintained by ICCS. This setup ensures robust data retrieval and alert dissemination across the system.

Conclusion

Task 5.3.3 has successfully laid the groundwork for a safer and more efficient mining environment by leveraging advanced AI and machine learning techniques. As we move forward, the integration of this system with Smart Garments and the Decision Support System will further enhance the safety and operational capabilities of mining operations, fulfilling the core objectives of the Dig_IT project.
