28/10/2024 – The Dig_IT project is excited to announce the successful implementation of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) through IOTA in two key use cases: Hannukainen and Titania. This innovative solution represents a major milestone in leveraging trusted, verifiable data to promote environmental transparency and foster community trust within the mining industry.
Leveraging IOTA DLT for Environmental Transparency
Under Task T7.4, the Dig_IT team has integrated IOTA’s Distributed Ledger Technology to record essential environmental parameters — including pH levels, turbidity, electrical conductivity, and emissions — directly onto a decentralized ledger. This initiative enables the mining communities in Hannukainen and Titania to access reliable, tamper-proof data, supporting greater accountability and engagement in sustainability efforts.
Public Dashboards for Real-Time Monitoring
Hannukainen Web Portal Dashboards
In collaboration with Hannukainen, Dig_IT has developed four public dashboards accessible through the Hannukainen Web Portal: Hannukainen Sustainable Mining Monitoring. These dashboards provide real-time monitoring of environmental data from locations like Akasjoki, Valkeajoki, Niesajoki, and Kuerjoki, allowing stakeholders to verify data integrity through the IOTA Explorer and confirm that data remains unchanged.Titania Online Monitoring Dashboard
Similarly, the Titania use case offers a publicly accessible dashboard to monitor environmental metrics in real-time, further promoting transparency and accountability. Accessible here: Titania Public Dashboard, this platform enables the broader community to visualize, interact with, and verify environmental impact data.
Publication of Open-Access Paper
Supporting this innovative effort, the team has published an open-access paper titled “IOTA-Based Distributed Ledger in the Mining Industry: Efficiency, Sustainability, and Transparency” (https://doi.org/10.3390/s24030923), which provides an in-depth examination of how IOTA’s DLT enhances sustainability practices within mining operations, promoting data reliability and transparency.
This development highlights Dig_IT’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology to meet the high standards of environmental accountability and community engagement, moving the mining industry towards a more transparent and sustainable future.
About Dig_IT
Dig_IT project aims to develop a human-centered IIoT platform connecting the mining ecosystem of assets, environment, and humans to increase mining efficiency: saving costs using optimized scheduling, increasing uptime using predictive operation and maintenance, and identifying new revenue opportunities using advanced geological interpretation on exploration mining phase. To address industry needs of minimizing accidents, optimizing production processes, and reducing costs, intelligent systems will provide real-time insights for the enterprise at all operational levels.
