Dig_IT portfolio is now available on Raw Materials Knowledge Gateway

Dig_IT project is now available on Raw Materials Information System (RMIS), the European Commission’s reference web-based knowledge platform on non-fuel, non-agriculture raw materials from primary (extracted/harvested) to secondary (recycled/recovered) sources, along their entire value/supply chains. RMIS meets the needs of empowering the European Union Raw Materials Knowledge Base (EURMKB) and acts as the central entry point to this nature of knowledge and as interface for policy support.

One of the thematic sections of the RMIS platform is the “Raw Materials Knowledge Gateway” (RMKG), which is a key element of the RMIS as it provides an access point with concentrated knowledge on raw materials from several providers, at European, national, and international level.  The portfolio of Dig_IT was published in December 2020 to the RMKG and can be found via this link https://rmis.jrc.ec.europa.eu/?page=rmkg. At a first glance on Dig_IT portfolio, the visitor will notice the visual identifier of the Project (Project’s logo) and the Project’s webpage. Furthermore, the visitor has the chance to navigate through the thematic sections “Overview”, “Raw materials Knowledge”, “Research and Innovation” and “Links and Contacts” where the relevant details are presented.

3rd Dig_IT Technical Meeting

On January 28, 2021, the third Dig_IT virtual technical meeting took place.

The main objective of the conference was to check the activities put in place during the last three months.

Wp1 was completed last month and currently all other WPs are proceeding on schedule.

After the lineup, the future action plan in view of the next technical meeting was discussed.

2nd Dig_IT Technical Meeting

The 19th October 2020, the second Dig_IT virtual technical meeting took place.

The main meeting’s objective it was the control of deliverables progress and review process.

The conference started with a summary of the project’s objectives for the first quarter, with a particular attention to WP1 and WP2 and a specific analysis of specific needs and open points of the project.

Moreover at the end of the event, participants discussed further actions to set in place to ensure quality of deliverables and they fixed some new important dates for document delivery.

1st Dig_IT Technical Meeting

The 11th September 2020, the first Dig_IT virtual technical meeting took place.

The session was focused on the sharing between partners of WP’S tasks state of progress.

At the moment each WPs and respective tasks are proceeding on schedule.

After the analysis of the actions already set in place, the future action plan was discussed and some important dead-line and new actions were fixed.

Moreover, during the meeting some organisational aspects were discussed, such as the introduction of some “face to face” technical meeting between partners who manage Data and the starting of a new deliverable approval and review procedure.

The next technical meeting is planned for mid-October in order to update the progress of each WPs.

Dig_IT - The Foundation For The Sustainable Digital Mine Of The Future

The 5Th of May 2020 Dig_it project, funded under Horizon2020 programme, officially kicked off.

Facing demand of raw materials increase and the necessity for mining industry to move towards innovative and sustainable techniques, Dig_it proposes the development of a Smart Industrial Internet of Things (IIoTp) that will improve the efficiency and the sustainability of mining operations.

More specifically, the Dig_ it platform using sensors at three levels (human, assets, environment) and collecting also historical and market data will feed them into a real time Digital Twins (DTs) that “will provide insights: for predictive maintenance and operation of mining machines and vehicles; to assess, map, and mitigate geotechnical and occupational health risks in real time”.

Beyond the environmental and health ambition, Dig_ it project has also a “social purpose” which is focused on “re-establishment of the trust between mines and the society towards a sustainable future in raw material production”.

Dig_it it is a collaborative project that engages 16 partners coordinated by “Instituto tecnologico de Aragon” and including five mines (Marini Marmi, Ceppo di Gré; Italy, La Parrilla Mine; Spain, Titania AS; Norway, Hannukainen Mine; Finland, Tapojarvi; Norway) that will be used as pilot experiences for the testing phase. In  conclusion, the project has some important expected impacts concerning both technology, environmental and socio-economic impacts such as: generation of know how (planned patents, publications in high impact journals and joint public-private publications), safeguard of environmental sustainability (including better energy and water efficiency and reduction in waste, wastewater and emissions), improvement of health and safety performance of the solutions provided  throughout the whole considered life cycle, creation of a lower TRL technology base for radical innovations that would help unlock substantial reserves of new or currently unexploited resources within the EU, enhancement of the economic viability of operations in the longer term, enhancement of the competitiveness and creation of added valueand new jobs in raw materials, creation of approximately a $190 billion benefit  for mining sector and $130 billion for the metal sector, innovation capacity and integration of knowledge improvement, public knowledge of the mine supply chain’s increase, mitigation of public opinion distrust towards most of the existing supply chain and market barriers towards IIot in mining organisation reduction.
